What is the difference between an Online High School Diploma and a GED?

by GED on January 25, 2012

GEDs and high school diplomas should be treated the same by employers that require a diploma. Similarly, if you go onto more schooling, whether at the local beauty school or a university, both are sufficient for meeting the high school graduate requirement. However, there are some difference between the options.

About Diplomas

An online high school diploma is now offered for both students who would like to complete high school in a homeschool environment and for adults looking to go back to high school. However, not all online high school diplomas are the same. Some online schools offer high school diplomas that are actually just equivalency certificates. This type of diploma does not guarantee that a college or the military will accept it as a bona fide high school diploma. Some online programs offer a high school diploma to people over the age of 16 when they pass a high school equivalency test while others offer an actual program with coursework. For parents looking for an online high school program for a homeschool program, there are many choices available. Many of these schools are accredited and offer high school diplomas and transcripts for post secondary education with the completion of their four-year programs. Earning a high school diploma has a number of advantages. The programs are self-paced and flexible. Students log in to their account and study according to their own schedule and at their own pace. As long as a person has a computer and a high-speed internet connection, the student can study anywhere.

How to Get My GED

The GED, General Education Development Test, is available to people who did not earn a high school diploma and decide to earn the high school equivalency certificate. Prior to taking the GED, students need to complete the pretests to determine their competency levels. It is highly recommended that students attend an adult education program before taking the GED test. GED classes are available at no cost at many public schools, libraries, junior colleges and community centers. These classes offer instruction and coursework in math, literature, writing, science and social studies. Today, the GED is also available online for those who want to study in the comfort of their own home. In addition, online GED preparation also allows flexibility and access to the program from anywhere with a high-speed internet connection and computer. However, the GED test cannot be taken online. Those who pass the test receive a Certificate of General Education Development. This is not the same as a diploma. Many colleges accept GED’s; however, colleges may require the person to take the SAT or the ACT. There are some universities that will not accept a GED unless the person has completed a minimum of three college credits at a junior college.
